Koyuki is slowly turning into one of my favourite labels. They have series of 3" cdr releases and mp3 releases. Six Notes is the latest addition to the 3" one. The musician Tomas Phillips created one single track of almost 21 minutes.
The music on Six Notes is drifting on the scarce lonely piano strokes. In a similar way as Kenneth Kirschner does the piano keys are touched gently. The generated tones float in the empty space searching their destiny, finding this in a bed of soft sine-tones. In the first half of the piece the piano plays a huge role, while during the development of this piece the sine-tones and other synthetic sounds slowly take over. In this evolution there seems to be a major role for a random factor of jumping sounds. As with previous releases on koyuki there is an overall sense of tranquillity in the music which makes this another great piece for playing in the evening. But again we hear another approach in this release; One with a bigger sense for development during the piece. A progression that reminds me of the work by already mentioned Kenneth Kirschner together with Taylor Deupree.
Six Notes is a lovely piece of music that delivers a lot to discover in the sound, while staying on a minimal level. Again a lovely one for the guys behind the koyuki label. |
