Tilburg is one of the bigger cities in the Netherlands. It's the place where I grew up and had a good time, though there was not so much going on in the more experimental electronic music scene. For my study I moved to Amsterdam (if I should believe some people still the place to be for new cultural outings, would be great to notice that some more I must say). Though a few years after moving there something changed in Tilburg. Rumours were spreading that a young group of people was setting up small underground concerts. This group was working under the moniker of Vatican Analog. Two of the driving forces behind Vatican Analog are Steffan de Turck (Staplerfahrer and one of the guys here at EARLabs) and Wouter Jaspers (Franz Fjödor, see also Exhibition). Together they form Preliminary Saturation, a duo of improvised electronics.
With true dedication, to their maybe Catholic background, they have produced an album called Disciples of the Vatican. With a holy task of producing music they have teamed up several evenings armed with a bottle of wine and cigarettes. At these evenings of prayer the boys recorded so much music that eventually led to a total of three tracks (on this release). It may not be a big secret that these two choir boys enjoy the works by the Norwegian duo of Sindre Bjerga & Jan-M. Iversen. On Disciples of the Vatican we hear music in the same vein as Bjerga/Iversen do: lo-fi noise and drone music made with analogue devices. I guess these guys want to sound like the old Lou Barlow (Sebadoh, Sentridoh, Dinosaur Jr.) of electronic music. It wouldn't surprise me if everything was directly recorded onto cassette tape to be transferred to any other medium directly afterwards. Maybe my description sounds as something bad, but actually it adds to the charm of the release. A release approached with a DIY attitude and made with loads of fun.
Musically there is nothing new on this cd, but still this is a nice release to listen to so once in a while. Now only question remains: how would the pope think about these two disciples? |
