Juan José Calarco - Raiz de Invierno

RATED: 10 / 10
reviewed by David Velez
9/4/2008
Last year Juan Jose Calarco published three releases: Plano Verttical, with Testtube, [a4] with Norweigan label TIB and Raíz de Invierno with The Locus Of. Only until a few weeks ago I managed to listen to Raíz de Invierno, and I was completely amazed as it reminded me of Plano Vertical, but this release is subtler and ironically harsher and more violent: a very powerful work.

The lethargic power of Calarco's music is very evident on this release, his music is foggy, dense, transparent and sometimes imperceptible. Suddenly when the calm takes over, something happens and enormous edgy wooden and metallic structures emerge from the fog building up twisted structures that later collapse into their own producing a sensation of ease, uncertainty and disorientation.

Even though this is a short release (19:52) it is so well structured and built that the elapsed time goes completely ignored. As usual Calarco plays with the notion of spatiality and time, building up an incredible experience that totally isolates the listener into a world of his own.

Another great release by Juan Jose Calarco who fortunately for the listeners of electroacoustic works, has a lot of material for future publication.
